A dystopian novel, In Between Seasons is set after The Fall, where what I can only call extremists form tribes who are hell bent in annihilating one another. More of a character driven story, Cassandra is able to clearly outline the struggle that her main characters, Kate and Hunter, go through to survive and exist in their world.
Some of the plot points were believable – I could certainly accept that the tribes were being brainwashed by their Chiefs into believing what would be most convenient to keep them in line. They were thought not to question or argue, but just accept. Quite a mirror image of what is currently happening in some cult situations.
Some of the plot points however were a little harder to believe. Kate’s original reaction to being kidnapped for one.
The story was slow to develop, only to rush toward the conclusion. With all the buildup regarding the confrontation with Kate’s tribe, and all the hints dropped that there would be a surprise attack, I expected more action driven sequences when the attack came. I expected a deeper and more emotional confrontation between Kate and “the weapon” considering the close relationship they had. It still is hard for me to fathom who was after Kate. When the confrontation ended, I felt a bit letdown. And the conclusion of the story felt forced and ended quite quickly.
I liked that Kate questioned things, and did not just swallow everything her father told her. She knew, in her heart that there was more to the story than what she was being told. She was feisty in the beginning, and it confused me how she became very accepting of what Hunter was telling her. Was it because what he was sharing solidified her belief that she was being lied to? I could not find the reasoning why Kate would not question what a veritable stranger told her, while she questioned everything her father tried to teach her.
There were a number of open questions and situations that Cassandra created that were not answered but seeing as this is the first book of The Fall series, I am curious enough to want to know what happens next.
Technically, the only thing I could point out is that the non-use of paragraph indentations in the advanced copy made it a bit difficult to read the story. It did not help that the advanced copy did not have distinguish the end and start of paragraphs with sufficient line spacing. The formatting of the book did not make the story easy to ready, which I hope, will be corrected in the printed or published e-book version. Cassandra’s writing style takes some getting used to, but once you fall into the groove of how she writes, it becomes a bit easier to follow and understand the story.
If you are a fan of the dystopian romances, a strong, hot alpha male, and a young girl who finds her strength and resolve when faced with a seemingly dark and deadly future, give In Between Seasons a chance.
