Summary:

Celebrated artist, Maxfield Caswell, is at a crossroads. Brilliant but eccentric, Max has developed a reputation of living on an emotional edge, of being temperamental and ungrateful. He is charismatic, attractive, flawed and isolated; until he meets Ava Jacobs, his exact opposite.

Ava is charming, bright, and empathetic. When they meet, she is quickly swept off her feet by the driven artist, and sparks fly. Max offers her an opportunity that would help her shine in the art and publishing world, an offer she has a hard time refusing. In exchange, Ava will need to work closely with Max who has already claimed that Ava is the one person who can pull him out of his darkness.

Will Ava be strong enough to help Max? Or will she find herself wilting under Max’s unpredictable nature? Will Max realize that it is Ava alone who can help him?

In Work of Art, Ruth Clampett weaves a tale that takes makes you feel the swing of emotions from angry, to flabbergasted to hot and bothered. She deftly pulls the reader in, swiftly and completely. Her characters are strong, flawed, and very much human. Tortured artists are always intriguing people, and none could be more intriguing than Max whose shattered emotions play not only in his heart, but in his life as well.

Ruth’s understanding of the art world is skillfully woven into the series, with very … arousing results. That scene where Max and Ava are working on producing a print of one of his paintings certainly raises body temperature – so beware.

Her heroine, Ava, stirs up polarizing emotions – one moment I feel and empathize with her, in another, I want to strangle her, and there are times when I want to shake some sense into her. She is bright, ambitious, driven, torn and totally drawn into Max’s spell.

In Work of Art, aside from tortured artists, Ruth also illuminates struggles that a lot of single young women face – what is a woman to do when she finds herself attracted to and being wooed by two strong and very attractive people of the opposite sex? Will she let her logical self take her on one direction, when her heart and emotions are taking her to take the opposite road? I am hoping to find out the answer to Ava’s dilemma in book two, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

Ruth Clampett, daughter of legendary animation director, Bob Clampett, has spent a lifetime surrounded by art and animation. A graduate of Art Center College of Design, her careers have included graphic design, photography, VP of Design for WB Stores and teaching photography at UCLA. She now runs her own studio as the fine art publisher for Warner Bros. where she’s had the opportunity to know and work with many of the greatest artists in the world of animation and comics.
The Work of Art Trilogy is Ruth’s third publishing endeavor, following Animate Me and Mr. 365. She lives in Los Angeles and is heavily supervised by her teenage daughter, lovingly referred to as Snarky, who loves art and visiting museums as much as her mom.
