Resist by Missy Johnson
Review by Theresa Esterline
Stars: 5

Mysterious start to a new series... A sassy, confident and unemployed heroine and a strong, silent, add potentially murderous hero. How long can they resist each other when working so closely together? And now a bit about the story...

Charlotte has been unsuccessful at finding an in at any newspaper. She is desperate and having no luck at any job, until her friend points out an assistant positron with some odd stipulations. One being her employer was accused but set free of murdering his girlfriend. This is one interview she is not sure she wants to do well at, but as soon as Jaxon Murphy sees her, he knows she is the one.

Favorite passage: “You have no idea what I expect from you.” “ You have no idea what I expect from you.”

Excerpt

A bang on my door interrupts me just as I’m about to come. I groan and compose myself as the banging continues. I fix my clothes and then stand up, walking over to the door to release the lock.
Ryan stalks in, annoyed. He throws a glare in my direction.

“You were supposed to have the Ferriman and Legana accounts to me yesterday. Do you know how much money the company will lose if they walk?” He laughs, throwing his hands up as he sinks into my chair, behind my desk. “Wait, what am I talking about? Since when do you care what the fuck is happening with this company?”

“Hello to you too, Ryan,” I reply smoothly.

“No, don’t give me that,” he rants angrily. “Everyone else might tiptoe around you because you’re a psycho son of a bitch, but I’m done. Either you put into this business that I’ve worked my ass off to keep afloat, or get out.”

“You forget that I own 51% of your precious company,” I point out, leaning against the window. “And if you had checked your email before you came storming in here, you’d see the two files you requested are sitting in your inbox.”

I watch, amused, as he whips out his phone, not bothering to hide my satisfaction as embarrassment begins to resinate on his face.

“It’s still late,” he sulks, not meeting my eyes.

“What is this really about?” I ask. “We both know I do more than my fair share to bring business into the company, yet your always on my back.”

“Because you’re a pathetic little cunt who gets away with everything,” he retorts, his face going red. He glances at my laptop, at Charlotte who is still lying on her bed. “Perfect example. You invest more time in your little whores, yet somehow everything works out for you. This one must be new. I haven’t seen her before,” he adds, studying Charlotte again.

I reach over and close the laptop.

“Maybe your attitude toward me is misplaced jealousy,” I say. His eyes darken and I grin. Just the reaction I was hoping for. “I mean, you’re stuck at home with a woman you don’t really love raising three kids who resent you.”

“I’m warning you, Jaxon. Don’t go there,” he says, gritting his teeth.

“Take your empty threats and get the fuck out of my office.” I speak in a calm voice, my eyes not leaving his. “You lost any chance of me respecting you the day you decided to fuck my mother.”

He rises from my chair. “You need to let that go, Jaxon. It was one time, and it was a mistake. If your father could forgive me, then why can’t you?”

“Did your wife forgive you? Oh wait,” I pause, smirking. “She never found out, did she? And what about your kids? That pretty daughter of yours must be pushing eighteen right?”

He walks over to me and lodges his forearm against my neck. I grin, which only infuriates him more.
“Stay the fuck away from my family, Jaxon, or I swear on my life—”

“What?” I taunt. “You kill me? Your precious little girl will be legal in a few weeks, Ryan. I’ve seen the way she looks at me. If I gave her the time of day you know she’d spread those legs for me in a second. You think you know what I’m capable of? You don’t know shit. Your tiny brain couldn’t even comprehend some of the kinky, degrading shit I’ll have her doing for me.”

Words are funny things.   Their meaning, the pictures they paint in the minds of those that hear them: they’re not always the same and to me at least, that makes them meaningless.   Take for instance the phrase ‘black widow’. Those words conjure the image of a spider, an eight-legged creature with the red imprint of an hourglass on its abdomen.   However, instead of speaking of an arachnid, of the resident of a spindly and dew-laden web, the people who whisper those words are talking about something much different.   They’re talking about me.   From what I’m told, I’m called the Black Widow because no man I’ve ever loved has survived.   Yet, I have no memory of any of it.   My new home leads me to the definition of another vague and meaningless word.   It’s a place where I’m supposed to seek refuge.   A place of retreat and security.   It’s a place where I’m supposed to be kept safe because I’m sick.   But the definition for this place is wrong and the word becomes meaningless when you’re tucked away and made silent by drugs and pretty white jackets.   My name is Alexandra Sutton and this is the story of what happened when I was imprisoned inside an Asylum.

  excerpt

I couldn’t contain my anger. “I didn’t kill anybody! I don’t even know who those men are…” “Do not raise your voice with me, Ms. Sutton. I’ve allowed your quirks in behavior thus far, but I’m growing tired of your insubordination. While under my care you will learn to control your outbursts or else you will be restrained both physically and chemically, if necessary.” “Through drugs, you mean. You’ll dope me up to a point where I can’t fight back.” “If that’s what I must do. Like I’ve said, I don’t prefer that type of restraint, but in certain cases, it can’t be avoided.” Standing from his chair, he rounded the desk to stand in front of me. I craned my neck to look up at him, my muscles tightening painfully with anger and the refusal to believe that I’d done any of the things of which I’d been accused. It wasn’t until he was close enough to touch me that the notes of his cologne wafted beneath my nose – something haunting and exotic, masculine and earthy. I shivered at the smell, looking away from him and grasping my hands together in my lap to the point where my short fingernails dug into my skin. “Look at me, Ms. Sutton.” I did as I was told because there was no point in fighting back. A slow roll of recognition penetrated my thoughts, the abysmal circumstances of this place, the futility and harrowing truth that I was under their control. Any hint of rebellion and I would be dosed into compliance, drooling on myself while nodding my approval of whatever horrible thing they had planned. They stripped you of your strength, your voice, your entire being, and replaced it with the structure implicit to an institution for the insane. “You are my patient and as such, you are under my control and also my protection. I will not hurt you in any way. My only job is to help you. However, any rebellion on your part will be met with equal force. Do you understand?” “Yes sir.” I spit out the words, angry that I was answering to a man I didn’t even know. “That’s a good girl.”

Devil in Duke's Clothing by Nina Mason *~*~*~*~* Cover Reveal

Isn't this a gorgeous cover?

What's inside is just as wickedly delicious.

Devil in Duke’s Clothing, an erotic historical romance set in Scotland in 1680, tells the story of an innocent bride's struggles to come to grips with her new husband’s eccentric erotic tastes amidst the instability and hedonism of the reign of Charles II. The book is coming in January from Nina Mason, the author of The Queen of Swords and The Tin Man. Book One in the Royal Pains Trilogy, Devil in Duke's Clothing is highly erotic, features scenes of voyeurism, bondage, flagellation, and a voyeuristic menage.

Here's the blurb:

Maggie York, a convent-raised foundling, knows the Duke of Dunwoody’s sexual tastes are a shade or two darker than normal, but marries him anyway—partly because she has no other prospects and partly because, try as she might, she can’t seem to exorcize her desire for the dashing ducal devil. Two years ago, she watched him swive and spank her lady's maid, luring her from the garden of innocence into the orchard of fleshly delights--and she's been hungry for more ever since.

Robert Armstrong, the duke, is a Roman Catholic whose extreme devotions as a child warped his desires as a man. He’s also a slave to the times in which he lives--and to his king. Everything he is, everything he holds dear, depends on staying in Charles II’s good graces. Unfortunately, Maggie isn't the bride the king selected for him. Now, to make amends, the duke must choose between the lesser of two evils: whore his wife or be reduced to a penniless commoner.

Whose interests will Robert choose to serve, his own, the king’s, or the woman he loves?

Here's the trailer (18+ only, please):

Here's an excerpt from the Prologue:

Maggie York had not set out to be a spy.

She’d only come into the housekeeper’s closet to look for a bootlace. It had finally stopped raining and she was eager to escape the musty, smoke-choked prison the castle had become over the past se’nnight. Sick to death of books and needlework, she yearned to be out of doors picking flowers or stalking rabbits, but could do neither of those things until she’d replaced the broken lace on her boots.

Her abigail, as usual, was nowhere to be found, so Maggie had ventured below stairs to apply to the housekeeper for aid. To Maggie’s vexation, Mrs. McQueen was nowhere to be found, either, and, too impatient to await her return, the young ducal ward elected to hunt for the needed item herself.

Now, she was where she should not be and someone was coming. Two someones, actually. If they caught her here, she’d be punished the way she’d been several years past when she’d broken the vase belonging to the duke’s mother. The old duke, the young duke’s late father, had tanned her hide so severely she hadn’t been able to sit down for a full week without wincing.

Fear pumped through Maggie’s veins as the larksome duet drew nearer. The lady was her absent abigail. The gentleman’s laughter she could not place. The duchy employed several male servants—footmen, a valet, a coachman, a gardener, and a handful of strapping young grooms--but the baritone tenor was unlike any of theirs. Neither was it the laugh of the duke’s younger brother, who’d been blessed with a cheerful disposition. The sounds of Hugh’s gaiety echoed so often through the castle’s corridors, she would have known it anywhere.

There was, however, one gentleman residing at Balloch who’d never laughed within range of her hearing. Once or twice, he’d deigned to grace her with a smile—and, Lord bless her—what a thing of beauty ‘twas to behold. Like the sun breaking through the clouds on a gloomy day. The merest glimpse made her bones feel like they were made from tallow. What a pity he was so seldom cheerful.

The laughter grew still louder. As the door opened wider, panic erupted in Maggie’s chest. She could not let them find her snooping like a common thief. Pulse racing, she closed the French doors betwixt closet and room as swiftly and quietly as circumstances permitted.

As luck would have it, the door’s linen curtains were arranged in such a way as to allow her to see into the room without being observed. The man came in first.

Her breath caught when she saw ‘twas none other than the duke himself—in naught but his kilt and shirtsleeves!

Mistress Honeywell, her lady’s maid, soon followed in her usual tartan dress but sans shoes.

Why were they both half undressed? What could they be about?

Maggie bit her lip as she watched in breathless silence.

After locking the door, the duke dropped the key into his sporran and led Mistress Honeywell to a long sofa facing the closet. Maggie’s heart leapt into her throat. She drew back and held her breath. If he saw her, she was doomed.

The maid sat quietly whilst he filled the antimonial cup with Mrs. McQueen’s medicinal whisky. Was the duke ill perchance?

His grace returned to the sofa and handed Mistress Honeywell the whisky. Was it the maid who’d taken ill? If so, why apply to the duke for physick? Maggie could not reason it out.

He stood over the maid as she drank the whisky. Since his back was to the closet, Maggie could not see what passed between them. After a spell, Mistress Honeywell rose and they turned to face one another, providing a perfect view of their full-length profiles.

Maggie expected them to embrace, but they did not.

Instead, Mistress Honeywell set about unlacing her bodice whilst he watched with rapt interest.

The maid wore no stays, but clearly had no need of their support. Her paps, though large, stood as proud and sure as a pair of cockerels.

When Mistress Honeywell was down to her shift, the duke stepped forward, untied the neckline drawstring, and reached inside with both hands.

Maggie swallowed a gasp when he seized both the maid’s breasts and proceeded to knead them like dough. Mistress Honeywell, astonishingly enough, offered no reproach. She only tipped back her head, parted her lips, and emitted a breathy sigh.

How could she abide, let alone enjoy, such exploitation? If a man ever treated Maggie thusly, she’d slap him so hard he’d see stars for a week!

The duke swept the shift off the maid’s shoulders. The thin garment slipped down her body to her ankles. To Maggie’s astonishment, Mistress Honeywell appeared to be unashamed--either by her nudity or his grace’s covetous stares.

By the light of Our Lady’s brow! Such impiety was not to be borne. How could they be so wicked? As Roman Catholics, both had to know what they were doing was sinful.

Here's a wee bit about the author:

I HEART BOOKS REVIEW

Officer in Pursuit (Lock & Key #3) by Ranae Rose
Review by Theresa Esterline
Stars: 5

Never ending Pursuit?

I think this has been my favorite book in the lock and key series yet! I was wondering who the bad guy was going to be since the pesky brothers were no longer an issue. There was lots of humor, chasing (both by the good and bad guys), and passion. And now a bit about the story...

Now that Sasha and Alicia are paired up with two of North Carolina's finest prison guards, Kerry and Grey are the only two singles in their group of six left. Only problem is Kerry is very skittish. When she finally tells Grey to stay away with her lame excuse he refuses and continues to pursue her, in a good way. The same time her worst nightmare has returned and is pursuing her in a whole other fashion...

Favorite passages:
- “You’re free, because you decided to be.”
- “Staying in the hospital overnight, just because of a few stitches? No thanks.” He grabbed one of her hands and squeezed. “I have a reputation as a badass to maintain, remember?”
- “I always thought New Year’s resolutions were bullshit, but that was literally the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

Officer Next Door (Lock & Key #1) by Ranae Rose
Review by Theresa Esterline
Stars: 5

She couldn't get him out of his uniform quick enough...

I loved the second story in the Lock and Key series!! There is lots of passion, a little gore, suspense and even a ghost. My favorite part was imagining Sasha running towards the woods in her bikini with her knife in hand. No one else would have brought a kitchen knife to a gun fight and been successful. And now a bit about the story...

Sasha finally got Henry in bed. Though the idea of a relationship with a man of so few words was starting to scare her. So as you can guess she runs off in the middle of the night. Now Henry is confused and finally makes up his mind to go to her when he comes across the wardens mutilated body hanging from the tree like a prize buck in hunting season. Henry knows this means Levinson is back and is looking forward to catching him. Can he balance his need for justice with his need to protect Sasha? Will she let him? She does have a very large knife...

Favorite passages:
- Her flirting was more akin to a contact sport than simple fun or teasing.
- Once you give someone a piece of your heart, that's it -- you don't get it back, and when they go, it goes with them.
- You didn't just tell someone you loved them and then stay up all night keeping watch, listening to a police scanner and cleaning your Glock.
- "Saying something doesn't make it true. If it did I'd e an independently wealthy billionaire living in a beachfront mansion. And you'd be my hired cabana boy, naturally."

I HEART BOOKS REVIEW

Officer out of Uniform (Lock & Key #2) by Ranae Rose
Review by Theresa Esterline
Stars: 5

Mysterious, suspenseful, sexy, and complete with men in uniform!

Great start to this new series by Ranae Rose. There are good ghosts, a somewhat friendly alligator, lots of hot men in uniform, and two murdering felons turned loose on the sleepy town of Riley, North Carolina. Whoops, I forgot the sassy friends, rescued dog, bridezillas, and I'm sure there is more I'm leaving out. I don't want to give away too much, so I'll just tell you a bit about the story...

Alicia is new the area, living quite a ways from town with only one close neighbor. One who doesn't close his bathroom curtains and the view is quite impressive. Except she always seems to be a clumsy, bumbling mess when she actually talks to him. Liam is the neighbor who also enjoys watching her shadow striptease behind her blinds each night. Once there is a break from the prison transport his protective instincts kick in high gear and then the sparks start flying high! You'll never guess who helps save our hero, but half will guess right at who breaks the felon's nose... Can't wait for the next one!

Favorite Passages:
- She’d gotten home ten minutes ago and had banned herself from the kitchen, refusing to allow herself to spy on Liam’s after-work shower.
- Alicia was prepared to return him if a rightful owner showed up, but hoped one wouldn’t – she was already getting attached to him, even if he was a panty thief.
- And never, ever tuck your thumbs inside your fists – you’ll break them if you punch that way.”
- She didn’t always trip over things, though she probably had a fat chance of convincing him of that now.
- “Hey! Not all of us have to scheme to get female attention,”
- Bodies fitted so tightly together they might as well have been a lock and key.
- She shrugged. “Who cares? The handcuffs make up for it.”
- “Luck is just a step away from fate.”
- “Sometimes life takes a bad turn. And sometimes you get lucky. Fate – whatever you want to call it – takes over, and you live to do something stupid on another day.”
