Excerpt:

“Whatever Preston’s done to you, it looks good on you.”
She froze, watching Amethyst with wide eyes, trying to process exactly what she meant. “I… uh…”
Amethyst leaned over to whisper, “Hayden told me about your bond. I’m happy for both of you.” She sat back, beaming.
Stunned, Dacia nodded slowly.
“No one else knows, but Preston needed Hayden’s help on something. It only came up because it was sort of necessary,” Amethyst explained, then sighed. “He wouldn’t tell me anything more than that. Whatever happens, take care of him. He’ll do the same for you.”
“I hope I don’t screw up.” Dacia took a sip of her drink to avoid more conversation.
Amethyst giggled. “Turn around and look at the smile on his face.”
Dacia turned, and found hope, and something more on his face. Trust never came easy, but Preston was gaining hers slowly. Everything he did and said was sincere. But how long would it last?
“I missed you,” he said simply, holding out his hand for hers. She took it and he pulled her into his embrace. His lips grazed over hers, before trailing a path to her ear. “Care to dance?”
“Mmm, of course.”
He pulled her to the dance floor, and wound his arms around her. The song was slow, and they didn’t do much more than sway, but being in his arms was the only place she wanted to be.
The whole world slid away as she fell into his crystal blue eyes. Nothing else existed.
“How was your day?” he asked in a rumble that ignited the fire inside her.
“Hmm?”
He chuckled, low and masculine. “What did you do while I was busy working?”
“Oh,” blushing, she nodded toward Lincoln who was dancing with Monique. She ran the boutique in Edenton, had her own clothing line, and occasionally travelled for fashion shows. “Showed Lincoln a house, and he bought it.”
Preston’s gaze swung to Lincoln. “That so?” His head tipped to the side. “Interesting.”
His attention returned and he licked his lips. She couldn’t resist, and pressed her mouth to his for a slow kiss. Gradually the heat intensified until she was all but panting.
“I want you,” he whispered against her ear.
“Mmm. Need you.”
Lincoln leaned over. “I have a ride.
Dacia jumped in surprise. Looking over, she asked, “You sure?”
He nodded, a sly smile on his face. “Going to a party.” He glanced over at Monique, lifting a shoulder in a shrug. “She’s going to help me with my wardrobe.”
“You look fine.”
His brow arched but his gaze slipped away. “I want to impress someone specific.”
“Be yourself. Same man I saw tonight at dinner. She’ll be impressed, Lincoln.”
“Thank you, but it’s time to start living, for me. New clothes can’t hurt.” With that he disappeared into the crowd
Preston chuckled. “Let’s get out of here.”
“Your house or mine?”
“Does it matter?”
“Mine then.”
“I’ll race you.”
“Mmm, what do I get when I win?”
“Anything you want, Minx.”
“You.”
“Already got me.”

“See you at my house,” she taunted.

Beckett Taylor’s quest to be a better man has brought Eve Hartt back into his life, but sometimes it feels like they’re bound together with barbed wire. Though he longs to love her without causing pain, the wreckage of their past continues to crash down around them.

Yet with the help of this brothers—and for his brothers—Beckett won’t stop trying. He’s determined to make them all a family, to make a life they want to live, and to make Poughkeepsie a place that’s safe to live it.

He can feel their futures balanced precariously on his shoulders: Blake and Livia and their children, Cole and Kyle and the new baby they’ve just brought home, and Eve…always Eve. He wants their dreams to be real. But murderers don’t just get Happily Ever After handed to them. They have to wrench it away from Satan himself.

Good thing Beckett is prepared to do just that. After all, saving Poughkeepsie is the only way his story ends.

Prepare your heart and your head for a wild ride in this final installment of the Poughkeepsie Brotherhood series. Debra Anastasia does not disappoint as she weaves the last chapter of a story that blends true love, turbulent emotions, and life’s harsh realities into an uplifting tale that calls to the good in each of us.

I HEART BOOKS REVIEW

Saving Poughkeepsie (book #2) by Debra Anastasia
Review by Wennie Conedy
Stars: 4

After reading Return to Poughkeepsie, I wondered how Debra Anastasia would wrap The Poughkeepsie Brotherhood series.

Haven’t heard of the series? Well, it’s the story of three brothers – brothers by choice and circumstance, not blood. Blake, Cole and Beckett’s friendship and bond all started in a foster home where they experienced ignominious situations from the hands of their foster parent. Blake was a dreamer, and artist who almost got lost in a safe haven he created, deep in the recesses of his mind. Cole was the spiritual one who quaffed the guilt he carried by turning to God and religion. And then there was Beckett, the protector who would do anything, and I mean anything, to ensure that his brothers were safe.

The Poughkeepsie Series are stories of romance, survival, family and faith. Beckett Taylor has seen and done things in the name of keeping his brothers, his friends, and the place he has called home safe and secure. He sacrificed his own happiness to ensure theirs. At the end of Return to Poughkeepsie, the second book, I wasn’t quite sure where Beckett would end up. I knew that the third book would be all about him, but I wasn’t quite sure if and how Debra was going to deliver a happy ending. And by god, I wanted to see a happy ending for Beckett.

Of the three characters she created, I was rooting for Beckett. I justified my support by offering excuses - I felt he was misunderstood, he got the raw end of the deal, and he sacrificed a lot. I could go on and on. But in truth, Beckett was not a nice man. He manipulated, threatened and killed people to gain power over his hometown of Poughkeepsie. He would be a character that I would love to hate, but Debra wouldn’t let me. She was able to draw a picture of the horrible acts he committed and yet temper it with instances of his goodness, his soft heart, and his love for his friends and family. His love for Gandhi, his love for his brothers, his love for Mouse and his love for Eve.

Blake and Livia’s love story can be described as sweet, Kyle and Cole’s love story can be described as rooted in faith. Beckett and Eve’s love story can only be described as fiery, haunted and eternal. Both Beckett and Eve have faults. Both Beckett and Eve accept those faults. There are no secrets between them, making their bond stronger than platinum. I suspect there would be nothing that would break these two apart.

The theme of brotherhood, family love, loyalty amongst friends resonates in Saving Poughkeepsie. But I believe the strongest theme in this book is redemption. Is this the ending I envisioned for Beckett? Not quite, but I’ll take it.

Saving Poughkeepsie. A strong finish to an already solid series. Well done.

              Excerpt:

“I’m not worried about tomorrow. I’m worried about right now, with you, under this Christmas tree.” Blake supported her neck as he laid her on the floor.
Livia turned her head. “You’d better convince me. So far you’ve talked about the dog going to the bathroom, trash, and dirtiness.”
Blake kissed her jaw and turned her head gently, kissing her mouth as she bit her lips together.
“Can’t I just convince you with my manly ways?” He wiggled his eyebrows.
He could, of course, do just that—but she shook her head. She loved the playful sparkle in his green eyes. His five o’clock shadow just made him more handsome, framing his kissable lips with scruff.
“Okay.” He put his fingers at the bottom of her shirt, lifting it gently so he could circle her belly button with his index finger. “You’re the sexiest, most beautiful woman on this planet. So sexy, in fact, that I had to have you. I had to make you bear my children because my universe and yours had to be combined. Everything I’ve ever been needed to be buried inside of you, so deep, so full of love that we created life. Twice.”
He lifted her shirt and kissed the tops of her breasts, whispering his devotion into her skin. “And it’s never enough. Unless I can hear you coming, I can’t think of anything else. All day every day. For years now. You’re that powerful, Livia. This. Us. It’s so intense that years haven’t cured me. I can’t stop wanting to make love to you.”
“Wow.” Livia smiled and pulled his face back to hers, kissing him and effectively stopping his beautiful words.

Excerpt
Once inside the apartment, I drew a hot bath. The rope fantasy I’d had earlier in the day had gone down the drain. It just didn’t make sense now. Right now, I just needed to hold my tiger. Let her know she was mine. And make up for punishing her. And rid myself of guilt. I felt bad about my angry fuck, yet she’d seemed turned on, not offended. After peeling off her clothes which I intended to burn since Dickwick had touched them, I helped her into the tub. My tub was luxurious. Big enough to let six foot three me stretch out, and it had a Jacuzzi. Truthfully, due to our hectic work schedules, Jen and I hadn’t enjoyed it much. Mostly, we took showers together. I watched as she sunk into the breast deep water. Her sigh was like a symphony to my ears. Turning on the Jacuzzi, I shrugged off my clothes and joined her, settling behind her. She was in my arms, her body and head resting against my shoulders and chest. The water gurgled around us, the bubbling jets caressing and massaging. We were in a zone. I grabbed a large sponge, squirted some liquid soap on it, and then began to wash her everywhere. Dickwick needed to be erased. “I’m sorry about tonight, “ I breathed against her delicate neck as I washed the back of it and her shoulders. “Did I hurt you?” She arched back in to me, splaying her hands on my thighs under the water. “No, Blake. You can never hurt me.” I pondered her soft words. They were true. I wasn’t capable of hurting her. My burning desire to protect her and fear of losing her ruled me. I’d never thought about the consequences of my actions with any woman. She made me feel things—emotions—I’d never experienced. And sometimes go to extremes. Kill for her I had to. I wanted to be her super hero forever. Silently, I continued to sponge her. She hummed into the percussion of the bubbles. As I soaped her tender tits, her chest rose and fell against me. My cock rose beneath her. Her half-wet ponytail tickled me. Impulsively, I pulled it loose from its elastic band and it freefell, cascading over her shoulders like a velvet curtain. The silkiness grazed my chest. Keeping one hand cupped on her pert little rosebud-tipped tit, I reached for the tube of shampoo. The only one she used. Gloria’s Secret Very Cherry Vanilla. I squeezed a few dollops onto her hair and, with both hands, began massaging it into her scalp until there was a lather. The erotic squishy sound and intoxicating scent of the shampoo aroused me, my cock and heart swelling with love and lust, one physically, the other emotionally. I had to have her. Not fuck her. But make love to her. She was thinking the same thing. “Oh, Blake,” she said dreamily. “Take me. Make love to me.” Gently, I lifted her hips onto my erection. She lowered herself onto my thick, aching length, taking me all the way. God, she felt good. So fucking good. I squeezed my eyes shut and let her know with a moan. On the next heated breath, I was gliding in and out of her, my mouth showering her with kisses everywhere it could, my hands working her slick clit, the water bubbling with love. We came passionately together. Oh baby, stay with me. You’re all I need.

I HEART BOOKS REVIEW

Work of Art ~The Inspiration by Ruth Clampett
Review by Wennie Conedy
Stars: 5

An e-book copy was provided in exchange for a review.
Summary:
Celebrated artist, Maxfield Caswell, is at a crossroads. Brilliant but eccentric, Max has developed a reputation of living on an emotional edge, of being temperamental and ungrateful. He is charismatic, attractive, flawed and isolated; until he meets Ava Jacobs, his exact opposite.
Ava is charming, bright, and empathetic. When they meet, she is quickly swept off her feet by the driven artist, and sparks fly. Max offers her an opportunity that would help her shine in the art and publishing world, an offer she has a hard time refusing. In exchange, Ava will need to work closely with Max who has already claimed that Ava is the one person who can pull him out of his darkness.
Will Ava be strong enough to help Max? Or will she find herself wilting under Max’s unpredictable nature? Will Max realize that it is Ava alone who can help him?
In Work of Art, Ruth Clampett weaves a tale that takes makes you feel the swing of emotions from angry, to flabbergasted to hot and bothered. She deftly pulls the reader in, swiftly and completely. Her characters are strong, flawed, and very much human. Tortured artists are always intriguing people, and none could be more intriguing than Max whose shattered emotions play not only in his heart, but in his life as well.
Ruth’s understanding of the art world is skillfully woven into the series, with very … arousing results. That scene where Max and Ava are working on producing a print of one of his paintings certainly raises body temperature – so beware.
Her heroine, Ava, stirs up polarizing emotions – one moment I feel and empathize with her, in another, I want to strangle her, and there are times when I want to shake some sense into her. She is bright, ambitious, driven, torn and totally drawn into Max’s spell.
In Work of Art, aside from tortured artists, Ruth also illuminates struggles that a lot of single young women face – what is a woman to do when she finds herself attracted to and being wooed by two strong and very attractive people of the opposite sex? Will she let her logical self take her on one direction, when her heart and emotions are taking her to take the opposite road? I am hoping to find out the answer to Ava’s dilemma in book two, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

War's Passion (Sons of War #1) by Lia Davis
Review by Theresa Esterline
Stars: 5

Can he stop her desire to run?

Quick novella in the Ashwood series. This story helps build confidence and deal with past tragedy. Nothing like Spring to help everyone start over. And now a bit about the story...

We've met Cora and Torin before and know they are mates, but so far Cora is timid and keeps running from him. Even though Keegan is no longer alpha, he knows his pack. While calming Cora he hopes to give her a job that will bring her back to the pack. Will it be enough or will her desire to run win?

Favorite passage: She needs to heal and become independent. If you push her, she'll run.

Excerpt
The familiar scent of spring lilies invaded Torin’s senses, enticing and alluring. His wolf began to pace and whimper when the man made no move toward the door their female stood behind. Why would she seek him out here of all places?
The door to the new temporary computer central opened, and the scent intensified. Turning toward the entrance, he met the stare of his mate and instantly grew hard. Whether Cora knew she belonged to him or not, he remained uncertain. He’d known since she’d come of age at eighteen. Though he had every intension of claiming her, he and his wolf had to wait until she came out of her grieving period over the loss of her family.
He ground his molars together and inhaled deeply through his nose. Felix and his band of fucked up minions were going to pay. Someday, somehow. Torin was going to be there to witness the fall.
Straightening fully, he studied her. Strawberry blonde curls fell in unruly waves around her shoulders as if she rolled out of bed. Maybe she had. He roamed his gaze over the rest of her. She wore a faded pair of gray sweatpants and a pink tee with a coffee stain above the hem. His cock hardened even more, pressing painfully into the zipper of his jeans.
She held onto their eye contact for only a brief moment, but long enough for him to see the distress and sadness she fought to hide from the world.
He stalked toward her, and, when he got within a foot from her, she retreated a step. Then Keegan flattened a hand on his chest. Torin glanced down at the leopard’s hand, then met his stare. “What’s up?”
Keegan chose to answer him telepathically—a skill the former Alpha shared with all the enforcers and sentries. I know she’s your mate, but she needs time.
I’ll give it to her, but she needs….
She needs to heal and become independent. If you push her, she’ll run.
Torin let out a low growl, then focused on Cora. She watched them as if expecting an attack. Sighing, he dropped his shoulders and held out his hand. “Good morning. What has you so upset?”
“Just a dream. What are you doing?” She indicated Alec and the five-screen computer system.
After a quick glance over his shoulder, he studied her closer. Her attention focused on Alec and the monitors. “He’s trying to figure out the new security layout, but he’s not having much luck.”
“Fuck you, Tor. If it was easy, they wouldn’t need me and Dane to work on it,” Alec growled.
Torin laughed. “He’s having so much fun. You should stay and join us.”
“I think I will.” Cora pushed past him to stand next to Alec at the computer.
Torin stared, shocked her sudden change in mood and interest in what Alec was doing. A low growl rumbled from his chest. He meant it as a joke, not expecting her to give her attention to another male. His wolf paced and snarled, demanding Torin grab her and leave the building.
