In a series debut for fans of Tracy Wolff and Sylvia Day, New York Timesbestselling author Missy Johnson asks a burning question: What happens when love is undeniable—and taboo?

Pietro Gustovi is loyal, polished, and hard as stone, the kind of guy women want and men respect. At twenty-three, he’s survived tragedies that would break men twice his age. And he owes it all to his father’s closest friend, Giovanni Spontagio, who took him in as an orphaned teenager. Pietro would give his life for Giovanni . . . but his heart belongs to Giovanni’s daughter.

Raised in Chicago under the spotlight of power and privilege, Lucy Spontiago feels most alive on stage. Determined to become a prima ballerina, she escapes her father’s protective gaze long enough to audition for the ballet in New York City. Soon, however, Lucy realizes that she is not alone. Pietro is watching her back. And though he’s like a brother to her, Lucy cannot deny the thrill she feels knowing his eyes are on her.

Pietro could never betray his mentor by sleeping with his only child. But Lucy follows her passions, no matter how forbidden. Soon their nights are consumed by explosive, red-hot temptation—a dance that will expose shocking secrets and burn everything else to the ground.

EXCERPT

It’s been nine days since my world collapsed. Exactly 214 hours since I lost everything. I remember every tiny detail about that day. I remember leaving the house that morning to the smell of freshly brewed coffee. My mother was already up and preparing a feast for supper that night. We were going to be celebrating, but they wouldn’t tell me what, and, as it turned out, I’d never know.

I remember joking with my father along the way to school about how I’d soon be old enough to do more in the family business. I remember arriving home just like every other day, only this time I was fifteen minutes later than usual after stopping off to buy a comic.

It turns out that fifteen minutes probably saved my life.

As I walked toward my house, I noticed a strange car parked in our driveway. Then I heard the shouting. Right away, I knew something wasn’t right. My mother’s voice rang out, terrified. I’ll never forget that sound as long as I live. Thinking fast, I’d crept up the side of the house to peer through the window, and what I saw will haunt me forever.

The sound of the bullet firing through the air ripped through my soul. I watched helplessly as my mother fell to the ground in a heap, blood pooling around her lifeless body. Her head was twisted, her eyes staring at me; only I could see it was too late.

She was gone.

I’d screamed, and for a split second, the killer’s steely brown eyes met mine before he ran out the front door and sped away in his car. I panicked and ran inside, where I found my father surrounded by blood in the hallway.

“Pietro?”

My attention snaps back to Giovanni, his voice pulling me out of my memories. My heart pounds as I try to focus on where we are. We’re parked in front of a sprawling mansion, bigger than any home I’ve seen before. I fixate on his kind gray eyes, trying to will myself to be strong, because men don’t cry. I’m fifteen now. I’m a man. And all I can think about is how disappointed my father would be if he saw me crying.

“This is where you live?” I mumble, pretending to care.

“This is where we live,” Giovanni corrects me. He sighs and reaches for his seatbelt, unclasping it. “Right now it may not feel like it, but you’re not alone, Pietro. I told your father many years ago that I would take care of you and I meant it. This is your home now. My family is your family.”

“Thank you. I appreciate it,” I say, the words sticking in my throat. I stare down at my hands in my lap, wishing I didn’t have to put on this front. I want to yell and scream, show the world how angry I am, but instead I hold it all in.

“Your father was a good man,” he adds, his expression solemn.

I find that hard to believe.

I knew little of what my father did, only that he had many enemies and many of his ventures were illegal in one way or another. Just like all the men in my family he’d been strongly involved with the Italian Mafia. I was too young to fully understand what that meant, only that it nearly always ended in death. What did that mean for me? Was I expected to try to carry on the Gustovi name? To imprint myself in my father’s world? I glance back at Giovanni. Can he tell how afraid of my future I am?

We get out of the car and I follow him inside, glancing around the huge entrance. Beautiful high ceilings and expensive décor catch my attention. It reminds me of a museum I visited the previous year for school. I shuffle my feet, almost scared to move, in case I mess something up.

My eyes dart toward a huge spiral staircase when I hear a feminine voice sing out. A young girl, maybe a year or two younger than me, floats down the stairs, her long dark hair hanging in waves behind her. She’s beautiful. Her flawless, silky skin radiates warmth and highlights her beaming smile.

“Daddy, I missed you,” she says, wrapping her arms around Giovanni. He laughs and lifts her up, planting a kiss on each of her cheeks. I find myself smiling at them, but inside I’m jealous of how close they are. I used to be close like that with my parents.

“And you must be Pietro,” she gushes, her bright eyes smiling. I’m taken aback by her warmth. She steps closer and throws her arms around my neck. I step back, both surprised by her attention and embarrassed at how my body reacts to her close proximity. I’m a fifteen-year-old boy and she’s beautiful. How could my body not react?

“Pietro, this is my daughter, Lucia.” Giovanni beams, and I realize he has the same wide smile as his daughter. He leans over and touches her face. “She’s been looking forward to meeting you.”

“I have,” she admits, her eyes lighting up. Her enthusiasm is infectious and I find myself smiling back. “Father doesn’t approve of most of my friends, so as you can probably tell, I’m very bored.”

“Lucia, we talked about this,” Giovanni mumbles. “When you can show me your friends are responsible enough not to go out all night drinking and taking drugs I’m more than happy to let you see them.”

“One time, Father. They were caught drinking one time!” I grin as she throws her hands up in frustration like a true Italian. I’m drawn to her fire and her passion. “Besides, I have seen some of your friends knock back a few drinks,” she grumbles.

“Last time I checked, my friends are not underage,” he fires back. He raises his eyebrows, suggesting that is the end of the conversation. Lucia shuts her mouth, her eyes narrowing as she shakes her head dramatically. Giovanni turns to me and pats me on the back. “Let me show you to your room, Pietro. I’m sure you must be tired after your long flight.”

“That would be good,” I say, throwing another glance at Lucia. “I could probably do with a nap.”

He takes my suitcase and starts up the stairs. I hurry to follow him, not wanting to make him wait. It’s like a light switch has been flicked in my head and I’m beginning to realize how lucky I am. Fifteen minutes earlier that horrible day and things could’ve turned out so differently. I wouldn’t be standing here, with a second chance at living my life.

But none of this changes the fact that someone took my parents from me. They’re gone and nobody other than me seems to care about finding who did this, not even the police. I thought of all people, Giovanni would be someone I could count on. Maybe he is, maybe he isn’t.

Someone will be held responsible.

I don’t care how long it takes me, I will find out who did this.

And when I do, I’ll make them pay.

Passion counts... whatever you do be passionate about it!!

Great start the the Spontagio Family series. I couldn't imagine growing up in the Italian mob or without my family. These characters have a lot to process and watch out for. I can't wait for the next one!! And now a bit about the story...

Pietro, at the young age of 15, has just watched his mother's execution. He was late for dinner, it still haunts him... if he was on time could he have saved them or would he be dead right alongside his parents. Whisked away to Chicago by Giovanni, he lives on the Spontagio estate with Giovanni and his daughter Lucia. They are very close as the years pass, but Pietro wants Giovanni's approval and to find his parents killed before he starts a life for himself. How do you best investigate the Italian mob without being buried six foot deep????

Favorite passages:
- Just dance like you’re the only one in the room.
- Follow your dreams, Lucy. Never let them out of your sight and take down anyone who tries to crush them.
- “You need to be careful who you trust in this world, Pietro. Sometimes those we think are our allies turn out to be the ones that hurt us the most.”
- Maybe I do need to make an effort to make some friends. I can’t deny how lonely I feel. Maybe what I need to do is take out an ad on Craigslist advertising for some friends. No, on second thought, maybe not. I’d probably end up buried in some guy’s backyard
- There’s no worse a feeling than not being able to trust somebody you’ve fallen in love with.

I HEART BOOKS REVIEW

Over the Fence by Melanie Moreland
Review by Wennie Conedy
Stars: 5

Two ordinary people. Develop an unconventional, flirty friendship. They met over a fence. They talk over a fence. One feeds the other over the fence. They have never met face to face. They also share one more thing. They each have secrets. Will their unwillingness to open up stop them from going further with their relationship?

Melanie Moreland has crafted a story with very relatable characters. Nathan could very well work in your IT department, and Kourtney could be your single neighbor who lives about two doors down from you. Characters come alive for me when their different personality quirks come through. Just like Nathan and his obsession with Kourtney's socks. Or Kourtney, with her inability to understand anything that deals with technology.

Over the Fence is one of Melanie's lighter stories. It is easy to read, and you find yourself drawn to the story and the characters. When each of them finally reveal their secret, both Nathan and Kourtney find it in their hearts to accept the other without any equivocation.

"You always call your place next door, or over there, never home, or even my house. Why?"
"That's not my home, Kourtney. It's only the place I was living while I was waiting for you to find me. You're home to me."

And that is where the charm of this story lies. Two ordinary people, develop an extraordinary friendship over an eight-foot-high fence. They get to know each other quite well, forgive each other for mistakes, and work together to overcome their past and secrets; because they both realize that what they have together is quite extraordinary.

I HEART BOOKS REVIEW

More (More #1) by T.M. Franklin
Review by Wennie Conedy
Stars: 4.5

College freshman Ava Michaels is struggling to keep her scholarship; enter Caleb Foster, her Physics tutor. Caleb has a brilliant mind, but after a few strange encounters, Ava realizes that he not just above average, he is way beyond that.  Caleb has more than a passing interest in helping Ava with Physics. He was actually sent to evaluate her. What his bosses didn't count on is the fierce attraction and the protectiveness Calebs develops for Ava. But can Ava trust Caleb enough? Can Caleb convince her that he has her best interests at heart? Can Ava accept that she might just be like Caleb; that she might be a little bit more than an ordinary human?

MORE is a young adult novel told from the third person perspective with themes of betrayal, politics, order and disorder, friendship, familial ties, and trust.

T.M. Franklin draws the reader in by dropping just enough clues to keep the reader engaged and very much invested without revealing the entire plot. Just as you think you have everything figured out, she throws in a wringer.

Franklin develops characters who feel real in a futuristic world where both humans and more-than-humans interact and live together. The pacing is steady and quick; the plot development is solid. The story conflicts feel realistic, even in her other-than-normal world.

I really like this story and look forward to the second book of the series.

I HEART BOOKS REVIEW

The Guardians (More #2) by T.M. Franklin
Review by Wennie Conedy
Stars: 5

So now she knows.

Ava Michaels has accepted the fact that she's just not an ordinary human.

When Caleb Foster entered her life as her tutor, little did she know that her life was going to shift drastically; she is part of the First Race, and wanted both by them and by rogue factions.

Hunted down by the mysterious Council, Ava is faced with situations where her hidden powers manifest themselves. Lured by the false hope that the Council would leave her alone, Ava lowers her guard, not realizing that the Council is not the only group who want her.

Her budding relationship with Caleb is threatened when he mysteriously disappears and she is accused of a horrific crime. She needs help in finding Caleb and clearing her name, but who can she trust?

The Guardians, the second book in the MORE series, answers lingering questions from book one, deepens the plot in book two and sets up the stage for, what I hope, will be a great conclusion to the series in book three.

Franklin's characters continue to develop and grow as the series progresses. The most prominent character growth is that of Ava, who is forced to trust a person she previously feared. She finds her voice, her powers, and her spine as she develops the strength of character and conviction necessary to embark on her search for Caleb, and save her life.

Franklin has developed an alternate world where powers beyond that of humans are considered normal, but where political ambition, deceit, friendship, and love remain as consistent as they are in the human world. There plot and story continues to develop and grow, and I look forward to all the loose ends being tied up in book three.

I HEART BOOKS REVIEW

Twelve (More #3) by T.M. Franklin
Review by Wennie Conedy
Stars: 5

Twelve is the third and final book in the MORE trilogy. In the past two books, Ava found out she was more than human, and possesses immense power. She found her soul mate, realized her potential, learned she was hunted, and was sired by an evil criminal. She has also learned that she is part of the Twelve, with genetically designed DNA to make them … more.

All she wants is to start a new life with Caleb Foster, but finds herself caught up in a conspiracy. She finds herself being forced to do what is against her nature. In order to defeat the enemy, she and Caleb find themselves forging alliances with former enemies and seeking out new partnerships.

Twelve, the final book in the MORE trilogy, delivers a story with punch, a lot of action and edge-of-your-seat anticipation. Just when you think you can predict what is going to happen, T.M. Franklin takes you down another path that has you scratching your head and ratcheting concern for the fate of Ava and Caleb.

The love story between Ava and Caleb, as integral as it is to the story, takes a back seat in this third book, where the needs of the many outweighs the wants of the few.

I have always taken the position that writing creates a beat and a rhythm that dictates the pacing and flow of a book. In Twelve, the beat is fast, sometimes staccato, sometimes frenetic, but always consistently delivering the action that the story demands.

T.M. Franklin successfully created characters that stand out and make an impression. There are secondary characters that continue to live with me – Tiernan, most specially. I would have loved to see more of the banter between Tiernan and Ava, and in case T.M. Franklin decides to do a sequel, I hope Tiernan makes an appearance.

T.M. Franklin has successfully created a believable world. A world where genetically designed individuals use their special powers for the fight of good versus evil. A world where enduring love is possible, where enemies can become allies and friends, and where love, truth and doing the right thing prevail.

This is a YA series that I would definitely recommend for all ages.

Exclusive Excerpt:
Deep sobs raked through my body, recalling how I’d indeed watched the life seep out of Hank and the deep satisfaction it had given me to do so. What kind of person does that? I felt his proximity before I heard him, and in seconds, Colton’s hand came to the base of my shoulder blade where he spread his fingertips wide and glided them upward bit by bit. “Jesus, Paige,” he murmured, barely above a choked whisper. “You’re shaking.” I hated that I had been distancing myself from him, inadvertently hurting him, but I was powerless to stop it. My mind was my worst enemy. I closed my eyes, overcome with shame. Colton had never witnessed one of my shower breakdowns before. I preferred to do them in private. I didn’t want anyone to see me fall apart. Especially not Colton. I wanted to be strong for him. I had my pride. Seconds ticked by before I finally braved spinning around on my heel until I was facing him. Unable to look him in the eyes, I bowed my head and stared at his chest. How do I explain to him that no matter how many times I shower, I still feel dirty because I have blood on my hands? Eddie had made me feel weak when he pointed a gun to my head while kidnapping me before knocking me unconscious. Hank had done so by treating me like I was worthless and disposable, as if my life had no value. It was as though they’d stripped me bare, stolen my confidence and my pride…me. Then, I’d become a monster myself and killed without mercy. So, which one of us is evil? I shook my head, grief-stricken. Nothing made sense to me anymore. Colton gently grasped my chin and lifted my gaze to meet his. A crease formed between his brows, and he frowned at me. Worry and regret clouded his normally bright baby-blue eyes. “Tell me what to do.” Panic filled his voice. “Tell me how I can help you move past this. I will do anything to get rid of that look in those beautiful eyes that I love so much.” The worst part was knowing that I had no answer for him. I felt robbed of my own mind to make the decision of what I needed to heal. My heart was vacant. I was an empty shell, lost and alone, stuck somewhere in my own private hell. “Do you remember when you found out the barn fire was arson and you sent me away?” I broke off at the painful memory, recalling what it had felt like when he pushed me away. I was doing no better now, but I was incapable to stop it. I tried to collect my thoughts on where I was going with this. He winced. “Yes.” His tone was low and full of remorse. “Then, remember you later snuck in my window and asked me to let you hold me”—I swallowed, stifling the urge to cry—“without any questions or explanations?” His shoulders rose and fell. Understanding filled his baby-blue eyes. His arms were already in motion, wrapping around my waist. “Yes,” he answered, pulling me close. “That’s what I need right now. No questions, no judgment…” My voice cracked, and I placed my hands on the center of his chest. “I just need you to hold me.” An overwhelming pain appeared in his features before he tightly hugged me. He nuzzled his nose into my neck, and I could feel his warm breath along my skin. “No one’s judging you, Paige. Please, please don’t be so hard on yourself.” His words sent my heart into a tailspin. I laid my head against his sternum and sobbed uncontrollably. I cried for the lives I’d affected by Hank’s death, mainly his wife and two college-aged children. I silently pleaded for forgiveness for my actions even though it had been self-defense. I prayed my mind would let me let go of this evil head-trip I was currently suffering through and allow me to move forward with my life. I dreamed my life with Colton would return to a normal, simple one. Eventually, I ran out of tears, and my breathing began to level out until I could only hear the water running and the sounds of my and Colton’s breaths as he continued to comfort me. Somewhere along the way, Colton must have adjusted the nozzle because the water temperature had changed. “The water’s warmer,” I stated quietly, wanting to break the silence. My lungs were scratchy and raw from all my crying. “I didn’t want to brave hypothermia.” His lips seemed to curve into a smile, and his hands soothed up and down my sides. “Though, I fear our hot water tank will run empty any minute now, and we’ll be left shivering again.” He shifted fractionally and brought one hand to the base of my chin. As his thumb started to stroke back and forth across my cheek, he gazed into my eyes. An endless array of emotions rippled out of him, matching the intense look in his baby-blue eyes. “You’ve lost your way before, and so have I.” The lonely ache in his voice seized my heart. “And that’s okay. Heartache has a powerful impact on the soul, and we all get lost now and then. But I need you to promise me that you’ll come back to me, Paige, because nothing will keep us apart. I won’t accept anything less than forever with you.” I desperately clung to the feeling of hope he sparked somewhere deep within me, and a genuine small smile spread across my lips at his natural ability to make me swoon with his tender words. “You promise?” For some unknown reason, I needed his reassurance in this moment. He bent forward and kissed the tip of my nose. “I promise.”

Enduring Fate (Fate for Love #1) by Alicia Rae
Review by Theresa Esterline
Stars: 5

You are my everything...

This story has comedy, tragedy, a strong heroine, and a sexy cowboy - what more could you need! I stayed up way past by bedtime to finish this book early this morning!! March will bring spring (which I can't wait for) and the next book in the series -- Woo Hoo!! And now a bit about the story...

After a tragic accident both Paige pulls away from Colton. She is worried that she will never have the same life she did before and she doesn't want to hold him back. Falling in love at 5 was hard for these too and risky - as they will do anything for the other... but will everything be enough?

Favorite passages:
- THIS TOO SHALL PASS
- “The kind of love we share never dims or fades.” He brushed his lips along mine. When my breath caught, he whispered, “It’s the kind of love that lasts forever.”
- “Knowing she would sacrifice her passion for a bump in the road would break my heart.”
- “All I ask is that you step out of your boundaries and take a chance.”

Colton and Paige are back again!! I love this couple and all the antics they go through. You will laugh, cry and love these two. Note, this review has spoilers for book one... if you haven't read Enduring Fate yet, go do that first, then come back and read this. And now a bit about the story...

I was heartbroken at the end of the first book when Colton pushed Paige away to protect her from this evil Hank. Luckily Paige is made of strong stuff and she refused to be pushed away! Except the way she decides to help puts her at risk, luckily Colton catches her and things just heat up from there as they try to catch Hank in his lies.

Favorite passages:
- She was my weakness and my strength all rolled into one, right around my heart.
- “Fate brought us together long ago, and no pompous asshat is going to take you away from me.”
- “Blood is of no significance when it comes to brotherhood or family.”
- “I should have known you wouldn’t be practical. Your glass isn’t half empty or half full. It’s overflowing.”

I HEART BOOKS REVIEW

Endless Fate (Fate for Love #3) by Alicia Rae
Review by Theresa Esterline
Stars: 5

Their love and faith was endless...

Loved this third book in Colton and Paige's story! There is passion, tragedy, and comedy!! If you haven't read this series yet, be sure to start with book one: Enduring Fate. And now a bit about the story...

Now that Hank is out of their lives, they can finish rebuilding the ranch and move on, right? Except guilt and Hank's wife are in the way. Defending yourself shouldn't be such a bad thing. But when the trouble starts back up again what other option do you have?

Favorite passages:
- “What’s yours is mine, baby.”
- “Even when I can’t seem to find myself or keep my footing in this world, you always make me smile.”
- Maybe Colton was onto something there— with sex being the cure to everything. I wouldn’t exactly say it cured everything, but it sure as hell had alleviated some of my pent-up stress— not that I would ever give him the satisfaction of telling him my revelation.
- “Our fears are our own worst enemy.”
- He was the boy I’d loved since I was a little girl.
- I felt like I was Cinderella, and these were my glass slippers. Only mine were cowgirl boots.
- Together, we can conquer anything thrown in our path.
